Avocado is not high in protein and is also not considered a source of protein. But like some other fruits and vegetables, it does contain protein; you can see the protein content in our table below.
How much protein is in an avocado?
A medium-sized avocado weighs about 250 grams and has about 4 grams of protein. The exact protein content can, not surprisingly, vary depending on the size.
To get more into it, 100 grams of avocado provides around 1.6 grams of protein. However, many vegetables and legumes have a higher protein content than avocado. For example, green peas contain about 6 grams of protein per 100 grams, while lentils boast about 25 grams per 100 grams.
Is avocado high in protein?
No, avocado does not contain enough protein to be high protein and it is not a source of protein either. To be high protein, at least 20 % of avocado’s energy value would have to be protein. However, only approx. 4.1 % of its energy value is protein. It is, however, slightly higher than other popular fruits that you might want to also enjoy as part of a balanced diet as you can see in the table below.
It is worth noting, though, that if you are looking for foods with higher amounts of protein than avocado and other fruits and vegetables, you need to look at protein-rich foods like meat, eggs, or legumes. You can check out our articles about different high-protein meat and fish, protein in eggs , and proteins for vegetarians, in which you can read more about legumes and other plant-based protein sources with a fair amount of protein.

Is avocado a source of protein or fat?
No, avocado is not a source of protein. To be a source of protein, at least 12 % of its energy value should come from protein, and as stated above, only approx. 4.1 % of its energy value comes from protein.
However, it is high in monounsaturated fats. In a typical 250-gram avocado, there is approx. 30 grams of total fat, the majority of which is monounsaturated. Only about 4 grams consist of saturated fats. So, since more than 45 % of the fatty acids in avocado come from monounsaturated fats, it is indeed high in these, meaning that avocados can be a part of a balanced diet.
