Instructions

Step 1
  • Preheat the oven to 175°C.
  • In a food processor, mix the butter and flour together to create a crumbly texture. Add cold water and mix again until the dough comes together. Flatten the dough into a disc, wrap in cling film, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Step 2
  • Peel and chop fresh, juicy apples into small even pieces and mix them with the sugar and cinnamon to bring out their natural sweetness.
  • Then, grease a 24cm pie dish with butter. Roll out 2/3 of the chilled pastry dough on a floured surface. Use the dough to line the pie dish, pressing it firmly against the edges. Cut off any excess dough and prick the base with a fork.
  • Par bake the pie crust in the oven for 10 minutes until it's slightly golden.
Step 3
  • Spoon the apple mixture into the baked pie crust. Roll out the remaining dough into long thin strips. Braid the strips over the top of the pie, tucking in the ends to create a neat finish. Brush the braided crust with beaten egg to give it a glossy shine.
Step 4
  • Bake the pie in the oven for 35 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the apples are tender. Allow to cool slightly before serving with a generous helping of custard.
Enjoy!
Tip

Keep all your ingredients cool as you work on your pie for a flaky and beautifully tender crust.

Tip

Choose tart apples to help them hold shape even whilst baking.

Tip

Let the pie rest once it's out of the oven as it's best at room temperature!
