Instructions

  • Wash the orange and use a zester or fine grater until you get approx. 1 tsp zest. Set this aside for garnish.
  • Peel the orange and cut out the segments with a small knife, leaving only the orange flesh segments.
  • Use a sharp kitchen knife to shave thin chocolate flakes from a larger block of dark chocolate and put the flakes into a bowl.
  • Chop the pistachios.
  • Spoon the skyr into two bowls and cover it with the orange segments, chocolate flakes, and chopped pistachios.
  • Finish with a bit of finely grated orange peel and serve immediately.
Enjoy!
Tips

For juicy and sweet oranges, look for ones that are firm to the touch and heavy for their size. Grating the orange, the secret is to only get the outer, coloured part of the peel, avoiding the white pith underneath as this can be quite bitter.

Tips

Choose the chocolate you like best. Dark chocolate, rich and intense, contributes a deep flavour that adds complexity to your breakfast topping. For a sweeter, creamier taste, milk chocolate can be a delightful choice. Regardless of the type, opt for good quality chocolate to ensure the best taste.

Questions about orange, chocolate chip, and pistachio topping

Orange, chocolate, and pistachio all taste great on their own, but combined into a topping, they are unbelievably delicious. So, keep on reading to learn more about it.

How to use orange as a topping for skyr or yogurt?
You can use almost the whole fruit! Use the zest as a garnish to add a more aromatic flavour. You can peel the fruit and cut it into, for example, segments for a juicy burst, thin slices for a delicate touch, or small cubes for a more rustic presentation. Arrange these on top of your skyr or yoghurt and sprinkle with the zest for a fresh, vibrant topping.
Is orange and chocolate a good topping for skyr or yogurt?
Yes, orange and chocolate make an excellent topping for skyr or yogurt. The acidity and sweetness of orange flesh provide a vibrant contrast to the creamy yoghurt, while finely grated orange zest adds a zingy note. Chocolate, especially dark, contributes a rich, indulgent flavour and a contrasting texture. Its slight bitterness balances the tartness of the yogurt and the sweet tartness of the orange perfectly.
Do you use salted or unsalted pistachios for topping skyr or yogurt?
Whether you use salted or unsalted pistachios as a topping for skyr or yogurt depends on personal preference. Unsalted pistachios allow the natural nutty flavour to shine, which complements the creaminess of the skyr or yogurt. However, lightly salted pistachios can offer a pleasing contrast to the sweetness of other toppings like fruit or chocolate, enhancing the overall flavour.

Juicy and fresh bursts of orange juice and zest on top of creamy skyr

The natural acidity and freshness of the orange enhance the cool, creamy tartness of the skyr. The zest plays an equally crucial role in this delightful pairing. It adds a distinctive, fragrant note with bold, zingy undertones that is more intense than the fruit itself. What makes this combination particularly delightful is the textural contrast. The smooth, thick consistency of skyr contrasts beautifully with the juicy, tender texture of the orange, making each spoonful a delight.
