Tips

Determining when the pulled pork is done cooking in the oven is crucial if you want to achieve the perfect texture and taste. The most accurate way to check if the meat is ready is by inserting a thermometer into the thickest part of the pork. The ideal internal temperature for pulled pork is around 88-96°C, as this ensures the connective tissues within the meat have broken down, making it tender and easy to shred with a fork.

Tips

Aside from the temperature, you can also assess the tenderness of the meat to determine if it is done. When the pulled pork is cooked properly, it should feel tender and almost fall apart when you apply pressure with a fork. If the meat is still tough or does not shred easily, it may need more time in the oven to reach the desired tenderness. Additionally, the outside of the pulled pork should be dark and slightly caramelised, while the inside should be moist and tender.

Sides for pulled pork sandwiches

You can serve a variety of tasty side dishes alongside your pulled pork sandwich. Some popular options include potato salad, French fries, corn on the cob, and grilled vegetables.

Potato salad adds a creamy and cool element and contrasts beautifully with the warm and tender pulled pork. This traditional accompaniment can be prepared in a variety of ways, including the addition of fresh herbs and vegetables.

French fries or sweet potato fries offer a crispy, salty counterpoint to the tender, flavourful pulled pork. Their satisfying crunch and golden-brown exterior make them a universally loved side dish, perfect for enjoying alongside the sandwich.

Corn on the cob is a summertime staple that brings a touch of sweetness and a delightful crunch to the meal. Grilling or boiling the corn enhances the natural flavours and adds a juicy, fresh element to the meal that pairs perfectly with the rich pulled pork.

Grilled vegetables, such as bell peppers, zucchini, and asparagus, provide a light side option, complementing the indulgent nature of the pulled pork sandwich. Their smoky, charred exterior and tender-crisp texture add depth and variety to the meal.

Add your own touch

Experiment with different marinades, meats, and add-ins that are to your liking. For instance, try using a spicy barbecue sauce for a smoky, fiery twist or opt for a different cut of meat such as beef or chicken. You can also add a variety of toppings or some cheese to enhance the flavours and textures of your pulled pork sandwich.

Toppings for pulled pork sandwich

There are numerous pulled pork sandwich toppings to experiment with. For example, fried onion rings introduce a wonderful crunch and a mildly sweet taste to the pulled pork sandwich. Their crispy exterior and tender interior create a delightful contrast to the soft, tender meat, adding an extra layer of flavour and texture.

You can also try adding caramelised onions for a touch of sweetness and depth. The slow cooking process brings out the natural sugars and intensifies the flavour. The soft, jammy texture of the caramelised onions pairs beautifully with the tender pulled pork meat.

Jalapenos provide a spicy, tangy kick to the pulled pork sandwich, adding a burst of heat that contrasts with the rich, hearty flavours of the pulled pork meat. The bright, slightly acidic taste of the jalapenos cut through the richness of the pulled pork, providing a refreshing and invigorating counterpoint that keeps your palate engaged and excited.

Try a pulled pork sandwich with cheese

Adding cheese to a pulled pork sandwich can bring a whole new dimension of flavour and richness to the dish, transforming the classic recipe into an even more indulgent and satisfying meal. Melted cheese can be layered on top of the pulled pork before closing the sandwich, ensuring that every bite includes a delicious combination of tender meat and gooey cheese.

A sharp and tangy cheese adds a bold and assertive note to the pulled pork sandwich, while a milder and slightly sweet cheese brings a subtle creaminess and harmonises beautifully with the succulent meat and tangy marinade.

The smooth, meltable texture envelops the meat, creating a luscious and comforting layer that will melt in your mouth and make each bite an irresistible delight.
