Questions about tortilla wraps

The best tortilla wrap recipe offers plenty of inspiration for delicious fillings for you to enjoy as a quick and easy lunch. To learn more about them, read our answers to the most frequently asked questions below.

What to put in tortilla wraps?

A mild-tasting, soft wheat wrap tastes wonderful with a vast array of simple tortilla wrap fillings such as fresh and grilled vegetables, falafels, fish, leftover meat like chicken, pork, and beef, as well as cold cuts like ham, sausage, and sliced turkey. Make sure to pair the cold cuts and vegetables of choice with a creamy spread and meltable cheese to get a tortilla wrap with different soft and crispy textures.

How to make a tortilla wrap?

These soft wheat wraps are delicious with just about any filling and, as such, make for a great way to use potential leftovers. Fortunately, making a tortilla wrap is incredibly easy. As you prepare it, preheat a sandwich toaster so you can make it nice and golden brown. Cut the wrap from the edge to the centre and place your fillings of choice in its four different quarters. Make one with spread and cheese, one with meat, fish, falafel, or the like, and two with vegetables. Now wrap it by folding the quarters over each other. Toast it until the cheese has melted and enjoy it while it is warm.

How to wrap a tortilla?

You can fold the wheat wraps in different ways. We suggest making a cut from the edge to the centre and placing your filling in the different quarters, so you get one with spread and cheese, one with protein, and two with vegetables. Folding it this way ensures that you get to taste your selected tortilla wrap ingredients with each bite you take.

How long do tortilla wraps last?

Leftover tortilla wraps will keep for 3-5 days if stored properly. As such, they may be prepared ahead of time. This makes them perfect for picnics, get-togethers, or lunch boxes. Simply, keep them refrigerated until you are ready to enjoy them. Either reheat them in your sandwich toaster or on a pan or eat them once they have reached room temperature. Eating them straight from the fridge when they are still quite cold will make them seem less flavourful, so allowing them time to acclimate will give you much more flavour.

Can you freeze tortilla wraps?

Freezing tortilla wraps themselves is possible but we do not recommend freezing them assembled with spreads and fresh vegetables. However, wheat, as well as corn tortillas, will keep for up to 6 months in the freezer. Simply wrap your stack of tortillas in cling film or aluminium foil and place it in either an airtight container or a freezer-safe bag. To defrost them, cover them with a damp paper towel and steam them in the microwave. You can also thaw them overnight in the fridge and then fill them with a delicious selection of fillings the day after.

Tortilla wraps with whatever your heart desires

If you have a few wheat wraps left after making burritos or enchiladas, you may be wondering what to make with them. The short and sweet answer is whatever you want! The mild taste of tortillas lends itself well to just about any filling you can think of, and their soft and chewy texture makes wrapping them around the filling of choice easy.

Tortilla wraps can, of course, be eaten for lunch and dinner but did you know that it is also possible to make a breakfast tortilla wrap? Using eggs and pairing these fried or scrambled delights with other great ingredients like tangy tomatoes, spicy chorizo, and buttery cheddar cheese makes for a great start to the day. They may be enjoyed both hot and cold, making them perfect for both dinner and a packed lunch.

Just looking into your fridge, you will have a never-ending supply of tortilla wrap ideas. Below, we have tried to give short descriptions of some of our favourite combinations to inspire you to make delicious tortilla wraps.

Classic wraps with grilled meat

Lunch tortilla wraps are a great way to use any leftover meat you might have in the fridge. For instance, if you have a bit of homemade pulled pork, slow-cooked beef, or chicken from the night before, you can enjoy it as leftovers in a different way by pairing it with different spreads and vegetables.

A mild-tasting type of meat such as chicken is easy to pair with a wide array of sauces for tortilla wraps. As such, you could go the flavourful Tex-Mex route and pair it with guacamole, corn, tomatoes, red onion, and fresh coriander. An Italian-inspired chicken tortilla wrap with basil pesto, mild-tasting cheese slices, and rocket also makes for a tasty idea.

In case an Italian tortilla wrap sounds good to you, a fun pizza version with pepperoni, fresh mozzarella, tomato, and basil leaves might also be for you. If this pizza-style wrap sounds a little too out there for you, you cannot go wrong with classic combinations like cream cheese, smoked salmon, dill, and chives or a ham and cheese tortilla wrap with salty olive tapenade, sweet sun-dried tomato pesto, or creamy aioli or mayonnaise.

In general, cold cuts like ham, chorizo, salami, pastrami, sliced turkey, roast beef, and so on are tasty tortilla wrap ideas.

Vegetable wraps

Tortilla wraps are also delectable with a good vegetable filling. Whether you think you might best enjoy one with tender grilled vegetables or crunchy fresh vegetables, or a creamy avocado tortilla wrap, the world of vegetables and legumes offers a wealth of options. As such, we recommend experimenting with everything from buttery black beans and earthy fried chickpeas to crispy homemade falafels to find your new favourite.

Pair sweet-tasting vegetables like red pepper, corn, and sweet potatoes with savoury spreads like tapenade and salty, umami-packed cheeses to create a well-rounded eating experience. Similarly, combine crunchy vegetables with smooth spreads like cream cheese and hummus to prepare a meal with textural contrast.

Play around with different vegetable pairings, cheeses, and spreads like flavourful and creamy Greek tzatziki or savoury and salty Japanese miso paste to uncover unique filling combinations.

Choose your favourite wrapping style

The best tortilla wraps taste delicious no matter how you fold them, and the process is not too difficult – especially not if you warm and soften the wraps in the microwave first. One of the easiest ways to fold a tortilla wrap is to do so like a clock.

This way, when you cut it halfway through, you can think of it as cutting from 6 o'clock to the middle of the clock. As such, when you fold it, you are folding the 6 to 9 o'clock piece over the 9 to 12 o'clock one and so on. Folding tortilla wraps this way makes it easy to get a little bit of everything with each bite.

Folding them burrito-style is also possible. Place the filling towards the half of the tortilla facing towards you and fold both sides in towards the middle. Now fold the bottom flap up – the flap closest to you – and over the filling. Mould the filling with your hands to make sure the fold is taut. Roll and tug it until you get a tight cylinder.
