Instructions

Soy ginger sauce

  • Melt butter in a high pan over medium heat for 3-4 minutes.
  • Turn down to low heat and let it slowly turn golden brown for about 12-14 minutes or until it smells brown without burning. Carefully scrape the bottom of the pan with a wooden spatula now and then to prevent the dry matter from burning.
  • When the butter is almost done, you have to keep an eye on it to prevent it from burning.
  • Add ginger and soy sauce – be careful as it fizzles up a lot.

Noodle salad

  • Boil the noodles according to the instructions on the package.
  • Drain the water and rinse the noodles in cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Let them drain in a sieve and cut them into smaller pieces.
  • Toss the noodles with edamame beans, steamed green beans, and cashew nuts. Add coriander leaves and sprinkle with sesame seeds just before serving.

Tuna steak

  • Heat a grill pan.
  • Brush the tuna steaks with oil and grill them at high heat for approx. 1-1½ minutes on each side.
  • Remove the fish from the pan and sprinkle it with salt and pepper.
  • Let the tuna steaks rest for approx. 2 minutes.
  • Cut the grilled tuna steaks into thick slices and serve them with warm soy ginger sauce, noodle salad, and lime wedges.
Enjoy!

Tips

To remain tender and juicy, tuna steaks need a watchful eye during cooking. Stick to the cooking time listed in the recipe to get raw tuna steak with a moist pink centre and a seared crust. If you cook the steaks too long, they lose their tenderness, and you end up with dry and chewy steaks. Only the outermost part of the meat needs searing while the inside remains pink.

Tips

As the tuna steak is served rare inside, it is of the utmost importance to ensure the tuna is fresh. You can tell the freshness just by touching and smelling it. The flesh should be moist but not slimy and smell clean like the ocean and not fishy.

Questions about tuna steak

Need a simple meal that is restaurant worthy? Then you need to try our easy tuna steak recipe served with a light and fresh soy ginger sauce. We will even show you delicious sides for tuna steak that will make this dish an impressive affair bursting with fresh and wonderful flavours. Read on to learn more!

How to cook tuna steak?

The best way to cook tuna steak is on a heated grill pan. While the grill pan is heating up, brush the tuna steaks lightly with a bit of oil. Cook the steaks in the heated pan over high heat for about 1-1½ minutes on each side until they are lightly browned on the outside and rare on the inside. Once they are done, remove them from the heat and sprinkle them with salt and pepper. Let the steaks rest for a couple of minutes before cutting them into thick slices.

How to season tuna steak?

When it comes to the seasoning for tuna steak, simple is better. Brush the steaks with a bit of rapeseed oil to give them a bit of flavour before grilling them on a pan. It gives them a subtle smoky aroma. Once they are done, sprinkle them with salt and pepper. Do not go overboard with the seasoning, or you will overpower the natural flavours of the seafood.

What sauce goes with tuna steak?

A soy ginger sauce pairs wonderfully with tuna steak and adds richness and depth to the fish. The browned butter in the sauce adds a nutty, rich, and decadent flavour, and flavours from Asian cuisine, like soy and ginger, are known for being particularly delicious with tuna. You can also go with other sauces like a garlic herb sauce, a simple cream sauce with mustard and lemon, or simply a spicy mayo.

What is a good side with tuna steak?

We opted for a simple noodle salad with beans, cashew nuts, coriander, and black sesame seeds since these Asian flavours and different textures make the perfect accompaniment to the tuna steak. You can also serve it with a simple green salad with a fresh vinaigrette, grilled vegetables, pineapple salsa, seaweed salad, salty potato or sweet potato fries, or grilled bread with oil and garlic.

Can you reheat tuna steak?

You can easily reheat tuna steak on a stovetop, but it is best to let it reach room temperature before reheating. Warm the grill pan over medium heat and add a little bit of oil for mild frying. Place the tuna steaks in the pan and cook for about 1-2 minutes on each side – keep a close eye on the tuna. We do not recommend using a microwave or oven because it may cause it to become dry and overcooked. However, seared tuna is also delicious served cold if you have leftovers. Simply serve it the same way as you would if it was warm, for example, with a cold noodle salad and soy ginger sauce.

Can you freeze tuna steak?

You will be pleased to hear that nothing is preventing you from freezing fresh or cooked tuna steak. To prepare the tuna for freezing, place it in airtight containers, freezer bags, or tightly wrapped in cling film and foil. It will maintain its quality for about 2-3 months if stored correctly. But make sure to check for any signs of a sour smell or slimy texture when thawing and discard the tuna if it has an off smell or appearance.

Tasty, light, and tender meat with a seared crust

A properly cooked tuna steak should be somewhat raw in the middle with a seared surface. The trick to cooking a tender tuna steak with a perfectly seared crust is a burning hot grill pan. It has to be extremely hot as the steaks are only on the pan for 1-1½ minutes. This method yields a perfect result with firm, seared edges and a juicy pink rare centre that is tender and succulent with flavours leaning towards sweet and salty. Enjoy a taste of the sea with a light seasoning of salt and pepper.

Experiment with the seasoning

Get creative and mix up different flavours for an exciting twist on your tastebuds. Mix the oil with freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice, chopped coriander, crushed garlic, cayenne pepper, honey, and ground cumin. Once everything is well combined, place the steaks in a resealable bag and pour the oil marinade on top to infuse the fish with delicious bold flavours. Turn to coat the fish and refrigerate for 20-30 minutes before searing them on a grill pan. Relish the wonderful zesty flavours with fresh herbs, garlic, savoury spices, and a hint of sweet honey.
