Tips

When making homemade whole wheat pita bread, ensure that the yeast is fresh and active. Knead the dough thoroughly for a few minutes to develop the gluten and create a fluffy texture. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until it has doubled in size. Make sure that your oven is preheated to a high temperature (around 250°C) before placing the pitas in the oven. Remember to keep a close eye on them while they are in the oven and remove them as soon as they have puffed up and are golden brown so you do not let them get too much – it happens quickly in an oven that hot!

Get more texture and flavour with whole wheat flour

Whole wheat flour is a great ingredient to use for pita bread as it yields more texture and flavour than regular wheat flour alone. Graham flour, for instance, is made by grinding the entire wheat kernel, giving it a robust and earthy flavour. Similarly, rye flour has a slightly sour and nutty flavour that gives the bread a tangy taste. As rye flour has less gluten than wheat flour, it does not rise as much, resulting in a denser texture. Incorporating either of these flours when making your pita bread adds depth and taste to it, making it more satisfying and flavourful.

Deliciously airy pockets for various fillings

The warm, airy whole wheat pita pockets are perfect for trying out different fillings and flavours. One of the most popular choices is falafel, a traditional Middle Eastern dish made from ground chickpeas or fava beans. Another great option is hummus, a creamy and flavourful spread made from mashed chickpeas, tahini, and other seasonings. For meat lovers, gyro meat or shawarma are excellent options, with their savoury and juicy flavours complementing the fluffy texture of the whole wheat pita bread perfectly. Other delicious fillings include tabbouleh, a refreshing salad made with parsley, mint, and bulgur, and baba ghanoush, a smoky eggplant dip that adds a burst of flavour to any pita sandwich. There are countless options when it comes to filling pita bread, so you will never get bored with the endless possibilities.

Make it your own

If you are looking to add some excitement to your whole wheat pita bread recipe, why not try experimenting with different additions like seeds or herbs? Using sesame, sunflower, or poppy seeds in the dough can add a crunchy texture and extra flavour. You can also mix in herbs like rosemary, oregano, or thyme to infuse the dough with aromatic and savoury notes. For a more intense flavour, you can sprinkle herbs or seeds on top before baking.

A great way to add texture, flavour, and colour is to dust it with cornmeal flour or polenta just before baking, adding a delicious taste, great colour, and nice crunchy texture.
